The dissolution of the SFR Yugoslavia also affected the Jasenovac Memorial Area. The once unique Memorial was divided into two parts: Memorial Area Jasenovac in the Republic of Croatia and Memorial Area Donja Gradina in the Republika Srpska, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. The legal status of the Donja Gradina Memorial Area was resolved in 1996 when the National Assembly of the Republika Srpska passed the Donja Gradina Memorial Law. In 2002 the Public Institution of Donja Gradina Memorial Area was established in order to preserve the memory of the victims of the Jasenovac Concentration Camp, to investigate and scientifically present the Ustasha crime of genocide in the Jasenovac camp and the Independent State of Croatia, and also to maintain the Memorial site. In 2020, Donja Gradina Memorial Area has 13 employees, divided into several departments.
